FIVE REASONS WHY QURBAN AND ‘AQIQAH ARE NOT THE SAME

16th July 2021 by Corp Comms

AND ONE REASON WHY THEY ARE ALWAYS LUMPED TOGETHER

Have you ever wondered what the difference was between Qurban (or korban) and ‘Aqiqah (or akikah)?

No, they’re not the same thing!

Which one should you prioritise, and is there a better animal to sacrifice than another?

This article will help you navigate the world of Qurban and ‘Aqiqah in a quick and easy way!

Similarity Between Qurban and ‘Aqiqah

Qurban and ‘Aqiqah are almost always lumped together. We know that there are differences, but what is it that binds them together?

That thing is the ritual sacrifice of a domestic animal – it be a sheep, goat, cattle or even camel.

It is therefore convenient, logistically speaking, to put these two rituals together.

Differences Between Qurban and ‘Aqiqah

The major differences between Qurban and ‘Aqiqah are the why and the when. In total, there are about five differences in why Qurban and ‘Aqiqah are actually two different things.

#1 Objective of Ritual – Why?

Qurban is the solemn observance of the story of Nabi Ibrahim AS and Nabi Ismail AS – very significant in the celebration of Aidiladha and are intimately connected with the rites during this Islamic month of Dzul Hijjah – for Hajj and for Qurban.

Let’s look at Surah As-Saffat, verse 102-109:

When the boy was old enough to work with his father, Abraham said, ‘My son, I have seen myself sacrificing you in a dream. What do you think?’ He said, ‘Father, do as you are commanded and,

God willing, you will find me steadfast.’ And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, We called out to him, ‘Abraham, you have fulfilled the dream.’  This is how We reward those who do good- it was a test to prove [their true characters]- And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice, And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations: ‘Peace be upon Abraham!’”

Nabi Ibrahim AS was commanded by Allah, through a dream, to sacrifice his son Nabi Ismail AS, and upon which, the latter agreed without hesitation. As both Nabi Ibrahim AS and Nabi Ismail AS had shown their unwavering faith to Allah SWT, Allah SWT replaced Nabi Ismail AS with a ram instead, and his life was spared.

Surah As-Saffat verses 108-109 shows the significance of Qurban as an encouraged ritual during Aidiladha, and leaving behind good legacies that would make us be remembered by people. In the Shafi’e mazhab, Qurban is considered a sunnah mu’akkadah (a strong sunnah that one should attempt not to miss).

‘Aqiqah is the ritual sacrifice of a domestic animal, to show gratitude for and to celebrate the birth of your child.

Rasulullah SAW said:

A child is in pledge for his ‘Aqiqah. Perform the slaughter on the seventh day, give him a name and shave his hair.” (Abu Daud).

In accordance to a hadith, parents are encouraged to sacrifice:

  • two goats/sheep for a baby boy, and
  • one goat/sheep for a baby girl.
(Credit: Alqudsi Agribusiness)

Saidatina ‘Aishah RA narrataed that Rasulullah SAW said:

Slaughter two comparable sheep for a male newborn and one sheep for a female. (Ahmad and Tirmidhi).

It is a sunnah for the parents of a child to perform ‘Aqiqah, if it is not a hardship for them. If a parent can only afford one sheep or goat for an infant son, then the parent should not have to bear the hardship of getting two sheep.

#2 Time Period – When?

Qurban can only be performed during the period of Aidiladha (10 Dzul Hijjah) and the Days of Tashriq (11 to 13 Dzul Hijjah).

‘Aqiqah does not have to follow the Aidiladha season or any fixed event in the Islamic calendar.

#3 Frequency – How Many Times?

Qurban can be performed as many times as the person wish to and can afford to do so, as it is a Sunnah Mu’akkadah.

As for ‘Aqiqah, it is only done once in a lifetime. If a baby’s parents have fulfilled ‘Aqiqah on his behalf, there will be no need for another ‘Aqiqah to be performed again the following year.

#4 Age Limit – How Old?

Qurban can be performed from infancy to adulthood.

However, ‘Aqiqah is performed to celebrate the birth of a child – so it is to be performed when the child is in his infancy till the stage of puberty.

As such, if you are performing a sacrificial ritual on behalf of your child, do take note if ‘Aqiqah has been fulfilled, as that would be the priority.

#5 Distribution – How?

Meat from a Qurban ritual is to be distributed raw. The one who performed Qurban may keep a third of the meat for himself, and distribute the other two thirds away – preferably at least a third to charity.

This sharing of meat to the community is to give thanks to the blessings of Allah SWT, and more significantly, to share these blessings to those who are in lesser situations where consuming meat is seen as an unaffordable luxury. Qurban meat provides an annual opportunity for the poor and needy to enjoy meat, if they were unable to have them at other times of the year.

This differs from the tradition of ‘Aqiqah, where it is sunnah that the meat from the ritual is cooked and served to people for a meal. It is also sunnah for the parents who performed the ‘Aqiqah to have at least a taste of the dish served as well.

You’re all set!

We hope you’ve gained some insight on the differences and the similarities Qurban and ‘Aqiqah share and that it has clarified any the questions you have.

Pesan Qurban Di Sini!

Menegakkan Syiar Qurban Dek Pandemi

Daging Qurban Diagihkan Di Kawasan Gempa

“Ramai penduduk kampung jarang mendapat peluang menjamah daging sepanjang tahun.

Gambar ihsan Alqudsi.

Daging Qurban Diterbangkan Dari Australia Ke Singapura

Ingin merasai daging qurban anda?

Peluang Wakaf Mushaf Selain Berqurban

Wakaf semashaf Al-Qur’an berharga $15; empat mashaf Al-Qur’an yang diwakafkan berharga $50.

Ask Ustaz Haniff: Is Drool Najis?

24th January 2017 by Corp Comms

A man sleeping on the sofa.

A man sleeping on the sofa.

Republished from Ustaz Haniff’s Facebook with his kind permission. Edited by Perdaus and translated by Azma Abu Basri.

Ask Ustaz Haniff #8: Is Drool Najis?

Query:

Is stale saliva najis (impure)? How do we differentiate between stale saliva and the drool that trickle from the mouth when we sleep?

I often drool when I sleep, but it seemed clear and colourless in appearance, with a slight smell. At times I wasn’t sure of its colour as it had dried up.

I am not sure whether it was stale saliva coming from the stomach, or from the mouth.

Some scholars said that stale saliva has a bad smell. However, drool that has dried up also has a bad and sour smell. I am confused, Ustaz. I hope so much that you will be able to help.

Response:

According to some religious scholars, stale saliva is not najis (impure), as there is no scriptural evidence (dalil) that specifically states that stale saliva is impure.

Therefore, the simple and more accurate opinion is that there is no issue of najis in your query.

However, the popular ruling among the Shafi’i madhhab (school of thought) held by the Malay community in this region is that stale saliva is considered impure, because of its unclean and foul nature.

If you would like to hold on to this popular Shafi’i madhhab opinion in this matter, please note that stale saliva is defined to be the saliva that flows out of one’s mouth during deep sleep. It has a bad smell and a thick consistency.

If one sleeps just for a short while and the drool that trickles from the mouth does not smell, it may not be considered as stale saliva.

If you are doubtful, revert the matter to its basic ruling, that is:
(1) to consider it as not impure, unless there is a clear evidence, and,
(2) there is no presence of impurity, unless there is evidence of its presence.

Yes, there are some scholars who may have the opinion that, to err in the side of caution, it is better to rule it as impure.

It is up to you to hold on to either opinion – the simple or the conservative.

What is important is not to overburden yourself, up to the point that practising the religion becomes impractical.

Tanya Ustaz Haniff #8: Adakah Air Liur Basi Najis?

Soalan:

Air liur basi: adakah ia najis?

Saya jadi keliru, Ustaz. Harap sangat Ustaz dapat membantu.

Jawapan:

Ask Ustaz Haniff: Umrah Without Husband & Paying for His Umrah Trip

Ask Ustaz Haniff #7: Umrah Without Husband & Paying for His Umrah Trip

Query:

I will receive my EPF savings this year, amounting to about RM100,000. With that money, I intend to bring my mother to perform Umrah, for it has been her wish since several years ago. For your information, my mother has performed the Haj in 1999. My queries:

1. May I perform the Umrah with my mother but without my husband’s company? (My husband allows this, but is not ready to perform it and cannot afford it, financially)

2. I do have the intention to fund my husband’s Umrah trip, as I understand his financial limitations. However, I have doubts because of his social background. I am worried that he might not change his ways for the better.

What is the ruling, for me to have these kind of thoughts? Please advise me, as I lack an in-depth knowledge of the religion.

Response:

1. Theologically speaking, it is permissible for a married woman to perform Umrah without her husband, if the latter consents.

The possible issue is whether you can obtain an umrah visa without a male mahram.

You need to refer this matter to the agency coordinating umrah trips in your country.

In general, women of a certain age may be able obtain Umrah visas without their respective male mahrams. It is best to refer this matter to the agency.

2. Your intention and action to pay for your husband’s umrah trip are admirable in our religion, and in sya Allah, you will be granted with great rewards.

The question whether your husband will change for the better is between him and His Lord. If he does not change his ways following the Umrah trip, in sha Allah, it would still not lessen your rewards.

Tanya Ustaz Haniff #7: Umrah Tanpa Suami & Belanja Suami Berumrah

Soalan:

Tetapi, saya berasa was-was kerana latar belakang sosialnya.

Ia memberi pahala yang besar, in sya Allah.

Ask Ustaz Haniff: Future Wife Reluctant to Live Away from Her Mother

23rd September 2016 by Corp Comms

Marriage requires adjustments from all parties, but not everyone can adjust at the same pace. Photo from pexels.com

Ask Ustaz Haniff #6: Future Wife Reluctant to Live Away from Her Mother

Query:

I have a concern in which my wife-to-be doesn’t want to live away from her mother. She wants her mother to live with us after we are married.

Frankly, I disagree because I feel that I would be uncomfortable with our marital issues being known to my mother-in-law. Surely, I would want some privacy in marriage. Also, I wouldn’t want my parents to feel awkward when visiting our home in the future.

What is the solution to this problem, Ustaz?

Response:

This matter is not so much a religious concern, as it is a marital issue. Therefore, it is best for you to consult a marital counsellor.

There are neither easy nor absolute solutions to this kind of issue. It depends on the given circumstances. There is also no single perfect answer or solution, and there will always be pros and cons to a chosen solution.

Therefore, rationally, and where religion is concerned, the guideline is to decide on a solution that has its benefits outweighing its costs.

The process requires you to discuss with your wife-to-be and her mother on you respective hopes and expectations, in negotiating the best (but not necessarily the most perfect) outcome.

Your wish for privacy and being independent is valid, but it doesn’t mean that it has to happen overnight.

Marriage requires adjustments from all parties, but not everyone can change and adjust at the same pace. Any changes should be gradual. This may be what your wife-to-be need, with your support.

Remember too, that maybe what is best is not for you to expect your wife-to-be to change, but instead, for you to invest effort in adjusting to how she is.

There are many married couples that live happily and harmoniously with their parents. This requires all parties to be open-minded.

Tanya Ustaz Haniff #6: Bakal Isteri Payah Berpisah Dengan Ibunya

Soalan:

Semua pihak perlu bersikap terbuka.

Ask Ustaz Haniff: Should I Use My Savings for Hajj or Umrah?

25th August 2016 by Corp Comms

Ask Ustaz Haniff #5: Should I Use My Savings for Hajj or Umrah?

Query:

I wish to go visit Makkah and Madinah. My savings that I have now is enough for me to perform Umrah in sha Allah.

The question is, should I continue to save up for Hajj, or should I go and perform Umrah first?

I am 22, but if I register myself to perform the Hajj, I am unsure when my turn will come up on the Hajj waiting list. Seeking your clarification, Ustaz.

[Editor: In Singapore, pilgrims are to register with the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore to be allocated a queue number to perform the Hajj, due to the quota system that the Saudi Arabian government has designated for all pilgrims.]

Response:

There are no issues in our religion for you to use your savings to perform Umrah first, even though it would decrease your savings for Hajj.

This is because, saving up to perform the Hajj is not an obligation, even though to be financially able is a requirement

In addition, usually the waiting period for the allocation of your turn in the queue takes a long time. Hence, you can save up again for the trip.

If one already has enough savings for Hajj but is still waiting for his/her turn, it is also not a problem for him/her to spend that money first for other things.

Mohon penjelasan, ustaz.

Ramadhan Report 1417H/2016

22nd August 2016 by Corp Comms

Hope it’s not too late to update Perdaus readers our busy Ramadhan month!

Food Aid Update!

Subhanallah, we had an exciting internal fundraising campaign for Food Aid this – all thanks to YOU, parents of our Madrasah students!

Our SMS appeal to parents of secondary students went viral because of your generosity and good-heartedness to spread the news to your family and friends. Within three days, we managed to raise quite a sum for our annual Food Aid project!

Alhamdulillah for the bounty of Ramadhan.

Ramadhan Food Aid 2016 front door recipient

One of our students distributing the goody bag to a recipient.

What is the Food Aid Drive?

Food Aid Drive is an annual project that our Secondary 2 Madrasah Perdaus students partake by as part of their curriculum in experiential and service learning.

With the funds that we raised and the in-kind donations, we distributed goodie bags each containing a Giant Supermarket voucher for groceries, and a container of Hari Raya cookies to spread the Eid cheer, to several low-income families in several areas in Bedok North.

In all, our students distributed 20 goodie bags to the families, with guidance from officers from Fengshan Community Club.

Additional goodie bags will also be distributed to the families of our low-income students from both Bedok and Bukit Batok centres.

Most humbly, we hope that this had been a good opportunity for our students to reach out to the community to be in their service.

Together, we make the world go round

Thank you to Fengshan Community Centre and the Social Service Office @ Bedok for their assistance and cooperation in this project.

And not least of all, our students who spent one fasting day to help the less fortunate. We are proud of what you have done, and we pray that this spirit of helping others will stay with you

But we are not done yet – it’s Ihya’ Ramadhan!

Secondary students were invited for the Khatam Al-Qur’an session after the Food Aid Drive. It culminates with an Iftar session with Madrasah students, followed by a congregational Maghrib prayer. What a good end to the day, subhanAllah.

Let’s recap our other Ramadhan activities…

Iyad Perdaus visit Masjid Sembawang 2016

Iyad Perdaus children visiting Masjid Petempatan Melayu Sembawang.

  • We welcomed Ramadhan (“Tarheeb Ramadhan“) with our extended family of Perdaus at the Kg Siglap Mosque in end May. Ma sha Allah, we had a good response!
  • A life-affirming trip for our SPEX’16 youth participants at Pelepah Falls.
  • Just before Ramadhan started too, we had a Tahseen Al-Fatihah session by the Akademi Cordoba instructors for our Akademi Cordoba workshop participants and KAD participants as well – more than 100 people turned up!
  • Perdaus had a Ramadhan Food Drive with Hong Kah North Community Club on 5 June and an Iftar with the Community session the following week. Alhamdulillah we had student volunteers participating in both events.
  • The Family of Iyad fundraising drive coupons for the FOI Hari Raya Gathering were all sold out, Alhamdulillah! Thank you for your support! Let’s watch a video of the fun gathering here.
  • The annual Perdaus Klinik Ramadhan.
  • Iyad Perdaus Ramadhan field trips to mosques and primary school visits.

May our next Ramadhan be better than this, in sha Allah.

Ask Ustaz Haniff: I Can’t Recite the Qur’an Well; Can I Perform the Umrah?

Ask Ustaz Haniff #4: I Can’t Recite the Qur’an Well; Can I Perform the Umrah?

Query:

I intend to perform the Umrah, and I am trying to save up for the trip.

Ustaz, I am not very fluent in reciting the Qur’an. Is it possible for me to perform the Umrah and read the supplications in romanised form (instead of reading it in Arabic)? Other than that, I am also putting in effort in attending classes to learn to read the Qur’an.

Response:

It is not a condition of Umrah for you to be able to read the Qur’an fluently, and it is not necessary for you to wait until you have learned to read the Qur’an before performing Umrah.

The rituals of Umrah do not require one to read the Qur’an. It is sufficient for you to recite zikr (remembrance) and supplications (while performing Umrah).

You may recite any zikr (remembrance) in Arabic that you are familiar with. For making du’a/ supplication, you can just read them out in Malay.

[Editor: Do consider the Qur’anic literacy and recitation programmes that Perdaus conducts for adults, Kelas Agama Dewasa, or the latest intake for Teknik Cordobana express course (coming soon).]

Tanya Ustaz Haniff #4: Tak Lancar Mengaji, Boleh Tunaikan Umrah?

Soalan:

Ustaz, saya tidak lancar membaca Al-Qur’an.

Jawapan:
