Ask Ustaz Haniff #3: Foreign Domestic Workers as Zakat Recipients

Query:

Can zakat be given to a domestic worker who still owes money to her agent?

Response:

If the domestic worker is a Muslim, then yes, and it is better for you to do so.

This is because foreign domestic workers may be considered to be from the poor and needy. If not, they would not be working overseas.

The second reason is because they are in debt and under the “gharimin” category (asnaf) for zakat.

They are still eligible to receive zakat even after paying off their debts to their agents, however, because they still belong to the first category of being poor and/or needy individuals.

Tanya Ustaz Haniff #3: Pembantu Rumah dari Luar Negara Sebagai Penerima Zakat

Soalan:

Ask Ustaz Haniff #2: Zakat on Fixed Deposits

Query:

I have a fixed/term deposit account. Can I use cash from my savings account to pay zakat for the former, or do I have to use money from the fixed deposit account itself?

Response:

You have two options:

1. To pay zakat for the fixed deposit account (if the amount has reached the zakat threshold) using cash from other savings source, or

2. Wait for the end of the term of the fixed deposit, and use the money from this account to pay the accumulated outstanding zakat, just like how zakat on CPF is done. [Editor: link to calculate zakat for your CPF here]

If the zakat amount for the fixed deposit account is not too overwhelming, and savings from other account(s) is sufficient to cover the payment of zakat, option 1 is preferable as it expedites the fulfilment of zakat obligation.

In situations where the zakat amount for the fixed deposit account is too big and/or there are no other savings source to pay zakat for the fixed deposit account, option 2 may be selected.

Tanya Ustaz Haniff #2: Zakat akaun deposit tetap (fixed deposit)

Soalan:
