Ramadhan Report 1417H/2016

22nd August 2016 by Corp Comms

Hope it’s not too late to update Perdaus readers our busy Ramadhan month!

Food Aid Update!

Subhanallah, we had an exciting internal fundraising campaign for Food Aid this – all thanks to YOU, parents of our Madrasah students!

Our SMS appeal to parents of secondary students went viral because of your generosity and good-heartedness to spread the news to your family and friends. Within three days, we managed to raise quite a sum for our annual Food Aid project!

Alhamdulillah for the bounty of Ramadhan.

What is the Food Aid Drive?

Food Aid Drive is an annual project that our Secondary 2 Madrasah Perdaus students partake by as part of their curriculum in experiential and service learning.

With the funds that we raised and the in-kind donations, we distributed goodie bags each containing a Giant Supermarket voucher for groceries, and a container of Hari Raya cookies to spread the Eid cheer, to several low-income families in several areas in Bedok North.

In all, our students distributed 20 goodie bags to the families, with guidance from officers from Fengshan Community Club.

Additional goodie bags will also be distributed to the families of our low-income students from both Bedok and Bukit Batok centres.

Most humbly, we hope that this had been a good opportunity for our students to reach out to the community to be in their service.

Together, we make the world go round

Thank you to Fengshan Community Centre and the Social Service Office @ Bedok for their assistance and cooperation in this project.

And not least of all, our students who spent one fasting day to help the less fortunate. We are proud of what you have done, and we pray that this spirit of helping others will stay with you

But we are not done yet – it’s Ihya’ Ramadhan!

Secondary students were invited for the Khatam Al-Qur’an session after the Food Aid Drive. It culminates with an Iftar session with Madrasah students, followed by a congregational Maghrib prayer. What a good end to the day, subhanAllah.

Let’s recap our other Ramadhan activities…

Iyad Perdaus visit Masjid Sembawang 2016

  • We welcomed Ramadhan (“Tarheeb Ramadhan“) with our extended family of Perdaus at the Kg Siglap Mosque in end May. Ma sha Allah, we had a good response!
  • A life-affirming trip for our SPEX’16 youth participants at Pelepah Falls.
  • Just before Ramadhan started too, we had a Tahseen Al-Fatihah session by the Akademi Cordoba instructors for our Akademi Cordoba workshop participants and KAD participants as well – more than 100 people turned up!
  • Perdaus had a Ramadhan Food Drive with Hong Kah North Community Club on 5 June and an Iftar with the Community session the following week. Alhamdulillah we had student volunteers participating in both events.
  • The Family of Iyad fundraising drive coupons for the FOI Hari Raya Gathering were all sold out, Alhamdulillah! Thank you for your support! Let’s watch a video of the fun gathering here.

May our next Ramadhan be better than this, in sha Allah.

Ask Ustaz Haniff: Domestic Helpers as Zakat Recipients

5th July 2016 by Corp Comms

Your foreign helper at home may be eligible for zakat.

Your foreign helper at home may be eligible for zakat.

Ask Ustaz Haniff #3: Foreign Domestic Workers as Zakat Recipients

Query:

Can zakat be given to a domestic worker who still owes money to her agent?

Response:

If the domestic worker is a Muslim, then yes, and it is better for you to do so.

This is because foreign domestic workers may be considered to be from the poor and needy. If not, they would not be working overseas.

The second reason is because they are in debt and under the “gharimin” category (asnaf) for zakat.

They are still eligible to receive zakat even after paying off their debts to their agents, however, because they still belong to the first category of being poor and/or needy individuals.

Tanya Ustaz Haniff #3: Pembantu Rumah dari Luar Negara Sebagai Penerima Zakat

Soalan:

Ask Ustaz Haniff: Zakat on Fixed Deposits

Ask Ustaz Haniff #2: Zakat on Fixed Deposits

Query:

I have a fixed/term deposit account. Can I use cash from my savings account to pay zakat for the former, or do I have to use money from the fixed deposit account itself?

Response:

You have two options:

1. To pay zakat for the fixed deposit account (if the amount has reached the zakat threshold) using cash from other savings source, or

2. Wait for the end of the term of the fixed deposit, and use the money from this account to pay the accumulated outstanding zakat, just like how zakat on CPF is done. [Editor: link to calculate zakat for your CPF here]

If the zakat amount for the fixed deposit account is not too overwhelming, and savings from other account(s) is sufficient to cover the payment of zakat, option 1 is preferable as it expedites the fulfilment of zakat obligation.

In situations where the zakat amount for the fixed deposit account is too big and/or there are no other savings source to pay zakat for the fixed deposit account, option 2 may be selected.

Tanya Ustaz Haniff #2: Zakat akaun deposit tetap (fixed deposit)

Soalan:

Ask Ustaz Haniff: Tarawih and Witr

14th June 2016 by Corp Comms

At a recent Perdaus event to welcome Ramadhan, at Masjid Kg Siglap.

Ma sha Allah, we are humbled and excited to introduce to you our Question and Answer series on religious queries on this blog.

Queries are answered by Ustaz Dr Muhammad Haniff Hassan. They were originally published on his Facebook and website. The original queries and their respective answers are edited for style and clarity and then translated from Malay to English. Both English and Malay content are published together to maximise its reach.

We hope that the general Muslim public will be gain some benefit and knowledge from this series, which we hope to publish at least twice a month, God willing.

In light of Ramadhan, the first post is related to one of the sunnahs of the Holy Month: solat tarawih. Let’s get to the first Q&A!

Republished from Ustaz Haniff’s Facebook with his kind permission. Edited by Perdaus and translated by Azma Abu Basri.

Ask Ustaz Haniff #1: Tarawih and Witr

Query:

My relative still has doubts on the number of rakaat of tarawih prayers and about performing witr prayers. He is of the opinion that it is not necessary to perform the witr after tarawih. I truly hope you could give me a very clear explanation from an Ustaz (on this matter) so that I could inform him.

Response:

On rakaats of tarawih

None of the religious scholars would dismiss the tarawih prayers even if they were two, four or six rakaats, nor would they rule the prayers invalid, nor unworthy of reward.

In fact, for the general masses, it is also acceptable to perform only two rakaats of tarawih, while the maximum number of rakaats is dependent on the abilities of each individual.

The much-heard ruling on twenty or eight rakaats serves as a general guideline for the general Muslim public to facilitate worship/ibadah, in accordance to the practices of the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions.

Both opinions are acceptable, and this guideline serves as a convenient reference to facilitate the ibadah for the masses – for those who are unable to pray twenty rakaats, they may pray eighteen, sixteen, ten or eight rakaats, or if not, they may do as many/as little rakaats as they are able to.

We should not dismiss any of the opinions in this matter.

On witr

The witr prayer is a sunnah (voluntary) prayer performed every night, and not specific only to Ramadhan.

The witr prayers are not necessarily performed immediately after the tarawih prayers. It is actually better to perform the Witr at the end of the night, before the start of the Subh/Fajr period, i.e. the period of Sahur/pre-dawn meal.

However, it is also not wrong to pray the witr right after tarawih prayers, as the period for the Witr prayers begins after Isha’, and ends at start of Subh period/azan.

Tanya Ustaz Haniff #1: Tarawih dan Witir

Soalan

This booklet will be useful as an all-in-one guide that provides you suitable supplications (du’a) for Ramadhan in hopes to increase barakah, and tips to make each fasting day more productive and rewarding, including advice on food. Among its contents:

  • Sunnah in Ramadhan
  • Ramadhan Hacks

rcm 2

So what else can we do today besides fasting?

What’s great is that this booklet includes a du’a list for you to list down your own du’as and reflections for Ramadhan. That way, it’s a good reminder to yourself on your goals for Ramadhan. A suggestion: place this booklet next to your prayer mat, so that it’ll be convenient for you to read your du’a and also look through what you have yet to do, to increase your good deeds during this holy period. So, do download the booklet below and print it away.

It will be interesting to return to the reflection page and compare how you’ve fared once Ramadhan is over – do you continue with your healthy choice of food? Daily supplications? Better management of time?

In shaa Allah we hope that this booklet will assist in making this Ramadhan more meaningful for you.
